Original GM Air Filters
Car air filters are of two kinds. Engine air filters, for instance, remove dirt and debris from your engine oil. That helps keep pollutants from building up in your throttle body, on spark plugs, or in your carburetor. Cabin air filters, on the other hand, capture dust and pollen in your HVAC system. That helps prevent it depositing throughout your ducts and vents and affecting the system's fans. Both can clog, however, and that can cause problems while driving. An engine filter full of sludge can over-enrich your air-to-fuel ratio. This can lead to worse engine performance, lower fuel efficiency, increased emissions, and engine misfires. A cabin air filter loaded with allergens and muck can choke airflow. This can cause everything from interior temperature problems to bad air quality. It can even affect how hard your engine must work to run. Luckily, how to tell when to change air filters is easy. For one, your check engine indicator could come on, but this can mean almost anything. A better way to tell is to look for filter brittleness, discoloration, and, of course, clogs. Lower fuel economy, strange engine noises, and excessive exhaust smoke can indicate a bad engine air filter. Low airflow and foul odors may indicate a bad cabin air filter. If still you're unsure when to replace the factory air filters in your GM vehicle, look through your owner's manual for a maintenance schedule.
