Original GM Brake Pads
Brake pads are key to helping you decelerate. Applying pressure to your brake rotors, they create the friction needed for stopping reliably. That makes them a vital part of your GM vehicle's brake system. There are many kinds of brake pads, however. They include organic, ceramic, metallic, and even carbon fiber. Cars use most of these, while motorcycle brake pads are usually ceramic or organic. Truck brake pads, on the other hand, are usually either metallic or ceramic. Sports cars use a specialty brake pad: performance. These are usually made of carbon fiber or ceramic that's designed to best dissipate heat. Figuring out when to change brake pads is easy: about every 40,000 to 50,000 miles, depending on how you drive and in what conditions. Luckily, you'll see signs of needing to replace brake pads well before they fail. For one, excessive surface wear usually shows when you step on the brake pedal and your brakes squeak or squeal. If your parking brake is off and your brake system warning light comes on, this is also telling. A grinding sound, however, can be a worst-case scenario. It often means brake rotor damage is happening. The same goes for if the car vibrates during braking. That says you've got warped rotors causing uneven brake pad wear. Other indicators include when your brake pads get to be less than a quarter-inch thick, or when you simply can't stop the car as well.
