Original GM Engine Parts

A factory GM engine has many parts. Its main parts work together to create the power that moves your vehicle. An engine block, for instance, is the main part of the motor. Combustion occurs inside it, producing that power. Pistons, for another example, pump up and down, compressing the engine's air/fuel mix as your spark plugs ignite it. Along with the crankshaft, they convert that energy to rotary motion, or rotation. Your transmission and driveshaft transfer that rotation to your tires, giving them spin. A cylinder head, on the other hand, attaches to the top of the engine block, sealing the area and helping to prevent the loss of gases. Your spark plugs and valves are attached to it, along with other engine parts. Valves are of two types: intake valves and exhaust valves. They regulate airflow, fuel quantity, and exhaust fumes in the cylinder head. The camshaft makes sure those valves open and close in time with other parts. Finally, the oil pan, sometimes called the oil sump, attaches to the engine bottom, storing the oil used in engine lubrication. Of course, many other engine parts help components fit together. They range from sprockets and rings to bearings, gears, and sensors. Over time, all motor parts can wear out. Signs of engine trouble can include your Check Engine light illuminating, trouble starting, stalls, idling or acceleration problems, and even lower gas mileage than normal.
