Original GM induction systems also go by the name of air intake systems. They're exceptionally important engine components. In short, they help send fuel and air into the engine's combustion chamber. Fuel injectors spray gas evenly into the engine, usually using electronic-controlled valves called intake valves. These open at the right time in the process to allow a mix of fuel and air into the engine cylinder. They work simultaneously with the intake manifold, which evenly distributes air to all cylinders and can also help cool them. How does an induction system know how much air to use? The throttle body, near the air filter box, usually has a mass airflow sensor attached, which controls it. The air metering system in gas engines provides feedback on this to an engine control unit/ECU and sensor system. An oxygen sensor determines proper air levels in the exhaust, helping tell the engine to make fuel-use adjustments. This keeps your engine running as efficiently as possible. During this process, an air filter assembly helps remove harmful airborne contaminants before they get into the engine's chambers. Signs of induction system problems include anything from subpar engine performance to your Check Engine light turning on. Even high idle, when your engine revs too fast in park or neutral or your idle speed increases or decreases drastically, indicates possible induction system failure.
